Tubbataha Reef is located in the Sulu Sea offset from the coast of the Philippines. The name is translated from the two words which collectively mean “long reef exposed at low tide.” Tubbataha Reef is actually two atoll coral reef systems with the largest of the two stretching 10 miles (16 km) long and 3 miles (5 km) wide. The second and smaller of the two atolls measures 3 miles (5 km) long and (3 km) wide.
Tubbataha Reef and the atolls serve as a sanctuary for more than 1,000 species. Visitors to the area may encounter lionfish, tortoises, manta rays, clown fish and sharks. There are around 300 coral species, 400 species of fish, and numerous species of birds.
The reef is protected by the Tubbataha National Marine Park which encompasses 239,000 acres (968,240 sq km). They are also guarded 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
